The relationship between religions and viruses (natural and computers)

August 27, 2009

It was about 10 years ago I heard about computer viruses and their similarities to human viruses or natural viruses . That comparison was very interesting for me and even this comparison ignited an idea in my mind: if we call natural viruses live or semi live beings then we can call computer viruses alive or semi alive too.
Here Ramadan has begun a few days ago and my parents like many other Muslims fast in this month and they practice rituals more than other months. Once I was looking at my mother praying and practicing rituals I saw her as a sick or metal sick who has been infected by a virus which its name is Islam. Then I thought more about it and found out yes all religion have many similarities with viruses  both natural and computer viruses.
Now here I want to count these similarities in their mechanism and essence .

1 The first and the most important similarity between all viruses that distinguishes them from inanimate  things is reproduction .Natural viruses reproduce via injecting themselves(their DNA or RNA [their genetic code]) in alive cells then with the help of those cells reproduce , Computer viruses reproduce themselves via injecting their code in other computer programs and when infected programs run and execute they reproduce viruses by running virus code! Religions reproduce themselves by infecting people’s minds. When a religion infects a person mind that person becomes a  potential vehicle for that religion mostly by infecting kids from parents .

2 Similarity in essence :  All kinds of viruses in fact are some codes in a proper language. Natural viruses are  pieces of genetic code which amino acids make their language. the language of alive things . Computer viruses are pieces of  computer code (an ordered set of a CPU instruction set)their language is computer language 0 and 1 or binary language . Religions are collections of beliefs and laws and rules which are expressed in in human language. I think there is no need to say that all these viruses use the language owner to reproduce and become active .

3 All viruses use their host resources in other word all kinds of them are parasite .Natural viruses use alive cells resources .Computer viruses use CPU time and memory which is allocated to programs (this is why your computer become slow) religions use mind resources and energy to be active and reproductive

4 All kind of viruses use their host connections to spread themselves because they host the language of the host communication .natural viruses use their host communications like sexual relationship, touching ,breathing in the same air ,blood transfer and .. . Computers viruses use computer networks like internet ,cool disks, old floppy disks and … . religions use humans mind communicating tools like speech ,raising children , books , internet , …

5 in all sorts having the code of virus doesn’t meaning being sick or infected . For example a natural virus can be passive in the body of an alive thing without any activity or some antibody prevent it from activity .a computer virus can be in computer disk without any activity because the user never execute the infected program or it has been quarantined by an anti virus program . For religion I myself is very good example I have the codes of Islam in my mind [I had been infected from my parents in childhood]
but this code is not active now because I disabled it many years ago ! Even by using and analyzing its code I can to detect many other mind viruses.

6 All kind of viruses have versioning and branching because all of them evolve! .Unfortunately my biology information is not good enough to talk about the evolution of  natural viruses but I know it exists. But in computer field I know that many programmers use the older viruses code to make new ones. Or many viruses have many versions . Mind viruses or religions have this aspect too. Christianity is updated and evolved version of Judaism and itself has many versions and branches .but Islam has  a new code however in the process of making it large pieces of code from Christianity and Judaism have been used. Islam itself has some versions and branches too.

7 There is a common way to fight with all these kind of viruses : Awareness if the alive body immune system can detect and be aware of a virus in most case can defeat it by making antibodies or … in computers to get rid of a virus the first step is detecting it by an antivirus software. What about mind viruses? The infected person’s mind must detect the religion codes as a virus that enslave that mind   and it s a little difficult job because most mind  viruses have some mechanisms to prevent being detected  as a virus.

However these were most important similarities perhaps you can find many other too especially when you study some instances of each sorts independently for example in each kind of them you can find some instance which are more dangerous or less or … . however this article was about the similarities between all kinds of viruses I d like to mention the most important functional difference that I have seen between mind viruses and other kinds :the victim of this a mind virus can be infected just by one virus at a same time but other kinds victims are not so.

Now I’d like to make some conclusions here
Religious people are some sort of sick people. Some of  them must really be cured.
Some people says religions are natural thing for human. I must say yes they are right religions are natural viruses but not their targets is not our cells its our mind.
Because of the fact that awareness is an effective way to get rid of this viruses perhaps you can use this text to make the infected mind aware! ;) but I never suggest to call Islam a virus in front of a Muslim I don’t take its responsibility at all ;)

* after posting the above text i searched about the idea in google and i found out i am too late! Richard Dawkins has written an essay before me!: Viruses of mind so i added this line.

Who was neda? (Voice of Iran)

June 24, 2009

In my last blog post I put two videos of a girl’s death scene whom was shot to dead by government religious militia (Basij). That post became very controversial. And few people objected me why I put these videos here. However I think there is no need to answer them here again because other friends replied them perfectly but I think it better to write a little more about that.

That girl’s name was Neda (Neda agha sultan) her name in Persian means voice or sound and I think she really became a big voice for us a voice that a world heard her. a beautiful symbol for our protest and people whom have been killed in this way. In my previous post I just tried amplify this voice as much as I can maybe more people can hear it .she was almost 27 (as old as me) and studied philosophy ( I love philosophy too and even once I could get master degree in philosophy of science and …).

So when I read these new info I felt more sympathy became more sad. I don’t know exactly about her beliefs but it s not far from mind that she was atheist, agnostic or just not Muslim . One time I had an online friend her father was a mullah but she had studied philosophy and she had left Islam. Nowadays I see some people in Iran who just believe in a god but their god Is not allah or jesus or … however I mentioned these things but even if I was sure that she was Muslim this event wouldn’t be different for me because it is obvious that she was a defenseless innocent human who was killed only for her quest for freedom. If there s holiness freedom is the only holy thing for me.

BBC Persian has interviewed with her fiancé Kaspin Makan. Here I have translated some part of it to English:

Mr Makan : “Neda’s goal wasn’t Mosavi or Ahmadinjad her goal was her country and it was important for her to walk in this way. She had mentioned many times even if she loose her life and get shot in her heart – incidentally the bullet hurt her heart – she would continue this way. Young Neda taught a big lesson to many people.”

Mr Makan said about that day : “when it happened Neda was far from the center of involvements she had been sitting in car with her Music master in traffic when she left the car because of hot air and tiredness. upon images that people have sent basiji militia (with ordinary clothe) shot to her heart ”

Mr Makan added “finally with many problems we could get her body yesterday ”… “we buried her in a part of Besht Zahra. They had brought some other victims of these events to bury there. It seemed that they had allocated that part for these people” !!!

Mr Makan commented about preventing of the ceremony “we had a plan to have a ceremony for her at Monday 2:30 in a mosque but Basijs and mosque didn’t allow us because they knew that people have gotten very sad and they predicted a large number of people would present. Now we have no permission to hold up a public ceremony ”

then Mr Makan has commented about some faked images on internet which want to make a relationship between her and Mosavi’s fans and he said about it“she was very close to me she was not a fan of each of these two groups she wanted freedom. Freedom for all”

What s going on in Iran now?

June 17, 2009

I have some foreign friends (almost all of them are atheist) who have asked me same questions about new situations of Iran so I decided to write this post to answer them in one place . If you want to know my view about this before the election or you need some more info please visit my previous post.

First of all What happened ?
I don’t write about it very much because you can find about it in many news sites. In this election Mir hosein Mosavi had the highest chance to be elected probably the second chance belonged to Mehdi Karoobi and then Ahmadi nejad and Mohsen Rezai . Most people though that whether Mosavi would won the election in first stage (if he had won more than 50% of votes) or the result of election would be revealed in the second stage(if none of candidates could gain more than 50%)
in election day (12th of june) the atmosphere of society was strange : the government disabled Short Message Service of mobiles phones however most people (they announced 85%) participated in this elections but there were some signs that Ahmadinjead’s government didn’t like it and because of it a few people couldn’t vote! The most strange thing happened a few hours (about 2 hour) after end of the election . They began to announce the results(they count ballot by hand)!!! about 10 hours later ahamdinejad was the winner with a breaking a record in all election in the history of Iran .supreme leader the most powerful man in Iran(a mullah) admit it by sending a congratulation message.  For most people it was obvious that it is just Ahmadinjead’s swindler government designed result .although from the previous day the government had sent many police and anti riot forces to streets in Tehran many people without any call went to streets to object and it caused some violences . In this day the government intensified internet filtering (blocking all preposition’s sites and some popular sites like youtube and facebook again and for the first time yahoo messenger[it s very popular messenger among Iraninans] ) meanwhile  in the next days the objections got stronger and spread out to other large cities they repressed harder . Even in some cities they disabled mobile phones completely but in TV Ahamdinejad called all this something like unimportant discontent after a football match . This was a summary of what happened .
Now some of my points of views :
1  They have lost a large part of their legitimacy and if they insist on Ahmadinejad’s remaining they will lost the whole of their legitimacy. And most of people will be against them this time clearly so in this condition they can just govern in very militaristic atmosphere . However it s not good for them too but it is one of their two options . If they accept to falsify the election and perhaps a new election in this case the loose many things too . In fact in this scenario they have confessed to  their crimes in  the election and this victory of people encourage them for future events . So changing the people votes was really a foolish mistakes (all candidate believes in the bases of ISLAMIC republic and none of them (specially Mosavi) had proposed a fundamental change).

2 Many of these protesters were not pro Mosavi or pro Karoobi (like myself) they just vote for them and for many of their main reason was to prevent Ahmadinejad(again like myself) but at this time it seems that they need and want a leader and the only choice is Mosavi so this movement has became a green movement (green was the color of mosavi’s fans)

3  I am happy to have voted because now i feel i have right to say “WHERE IS MY VOTE?” (even for a mullah [read my previous post for more comment])
What will happen?
I don’t know! Perhaps the worst scenario: they will kill and arrest many of protesters and continue to govern in a militaristic atmosphere and people will know that reforming in ISLAMIC republic(!!!) is absolutely impossible .

Should I vote for a mullah?

June 8, 2009

These days Iran experiences a new political atmosphere which has affected most people. it is because of coming Tenth presidential election I think this new atmosphere has brought us some positive points:
for the first time we watched TV disputation between candidates and these disputation cleared many things for all people (perhaps because it was the first time) . It  revealed how  greedy  they are for power . In these disputations Ahmadinejad proved that he doesn’t know any thing about moralities he showed his rare ability to lie obviously in front of TV cameras and ten millions of viewers . They brought up some issues like big financial corruptions which had never been discussed in a public medias .i get thrilled when I see a candidate called Ahmadinejad a liar in Islamic TV or when they bring up each other dark past . all these resembles a putrid swamp which because of a shaking its bad smell has increased a lot. But I think people must smell it and never forget it. Yes it seams even a weak and faked democracies have some positive  points.
Anyway now why I choosed this title for this blog post . There are 4 candidates who none of them presents even a part of which I expect form president.
1 Mahmood Ahmadinjed the prsenet president who many people in the world know him for his ridiculous speeches and behaviors
2 Mohsen Rezai the former commander of revolutionary guards (a slaughter )
3 Mehdi Karoobi a mullah a former parliament chief . He has dark past too but not as dark as the others’ past. No he clearly talks about his reformist beliefs and tendencies.
4 Mir Hosein Mosavi former prime minster during war between iran and iraq(now we don’t have prime minster in Iran when he was prime minster he had most abilities of the president) he is a so called reformist but he wants to have traditional forces in his basket too so he never talks being a reformist or …
between these candidates Ahmadinejad and Mosavi have higher chance . Ahamadinejad for his power to change result of ballots and the support of some red necks whom been fed  in recent months . And Mosavi for Khatami’s support(so called reformist pretty popular former president) and a opposition wave among people which he has built against Ahamadinejad . But I am sure if vote I won’t vote for none of them . So the only unpleasant choice which remains for me is voting for that mullah because he is less worse that the others.
What do you think? Is it embarrassing for an atheist/agnostic(who can’t leave the country at least for some years) to vote to a mullah ? Should I abstain like a few other people?.(i know abstaining doesn’t work in Iran because they can easily announce false statistics) .
By the way did I make many mistakes in this text?(it was my first time that I wrote something about this kind of subject in English)

A Job interview

May 23, 2009

About 2 months ago I participate in an examination for a governmental job there were many participant for position that I had booked fortunately I was successful in competition with 30 – 40 people. that examination included two parts : an specific questions which were computer related (my field)and general questions. This part were mostly religious and politic questions!!
My score in both parts were great. About one month ago they announced the result and I became glad until a few days ago that they invited me for an interview. It was a little weird for me because that position just needs one person and they had just announced my name.
when I went there for interview a long beard man asked me some religious questions like how do I pray and the Islamic laws praying laws and … (it s a common process in Iran to get a governmental job). I answer all his question very good except two very simple question about some Arabic sentences that Muslims say during praying. I knew these sentences very well because I was good Muslim and I used to pray 5 times a day but when he asked me I mixed them up however I corrected them at last but he found out that I don’t pray regularly!!!
When I left his room I was angry that why I had to answer those questions why I had to pretend to be a Muslim and … and also to reduce my chance to get that job. But for a moment I became a little happy for forgetting those bullshits.
I remembered when I left Islam I was thinking that weather I could live a day without mental existence called god. Because god attended in my mind for many years and got used to feel him observing me in all times . but this event proved me that from that god just a pale memory has remained and now I feel happy and pride for it.

Happy NoRooz(first day of new year in persian calendar)

March 20, 2009

A few minutes ago new years started in Iran and other countries which use Jalali (Persian) Calender .So happy new year to anyone who celebrate this.
The new years in Persian calendar starts at spring equinox .so today is “norouz” = “New Rooz ” = “new day” it’s exactly the time that spring starts . It s one of few things that I love about Iran . Because this celebration and this most accurate calendar in the world are not Islamic and religious and they are pre-Islamic traditions . However this celebration doesn’t excite me as before especially this year that I’m sorry for that young blogger who died in prison and also for his family who are mourning now for their child in the new year.(i have written about it in my previous post).

i know that almost everyone here don’t celebrate nowrouz so i just say: “Happy new Spring to you”

Should i continue my being in internet as an atheist?!!

March 19, 2009

I am a little scared .the Iranian revolutionary guards (the most cruel and brutish armed force in Iran) have arrested 26 people for anti religious activity on Internet .here converting from Islam or even saying something against it in public can cause death punishment. Honestly I admit that now I am more concerned about myself than being worried about those poor people who have been arrested for ambiguous accuses . I don’t any of them (in fact I don’t any active Iranian atheist on internet ) and they haven’t announced their identities but I wish they won’t be executed. however I right anonymously but now that I am writing these lines have fear to be accused of having relationship wit them or defending them.
It s the first time that the revolutionary guards are getting involved in these cases so it s very alarming.
its news in reuters :
Iran says uncovers foreign-backed Internet plot
Another bad news that I heard today was :
Yesterday “Omid reza Mir Saiafi” a young iranian blogger died in the prison too . These are just announced activities and certainly there are many other events that aren’t expressed in medias.
in this link you find more information about this blogger:
http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jbMfkVHvOJif_aCC…

What should I do?!!!
should I stop?
Internet is the only place that I can be anonymously myself !!!
I won’t stop but I must be more cautious .
